DESCRIPTION

Mechanisms of resistance to antiangiogenic therapies.
Therapeutic studies in Kidney Cancer murine models, both PDOX and syngenic.
Therapeutic studies in pancreatic NeuroEndocrine tumors.
Discovery of non-invasive biomarkers in clinical trials with antiangiogenics.

Our research group at the ProCURE Program (Catalan Institute of Oncology) and OncoBell Program (IDIBELL) is focused on determining the consequences of adaptation and resistance to anti-angiogenic cancer therapy. For that we use translational research in murine models of cancer, particularly Kindey Cancer PDOX models and NeuroEndocrine transgenic models to study in vivo mechanisms of adaptation to anti-angiogenics, and validate our findings using clinical samples from our hospital and collaborating institutions.
Our scientific achievements have been published in prestigious journals in the field of cancer research with numerous “preview”, “highlight” or commentary articles in high impact scientific journals. Furthermore, we have an important international position in the field of antitumor therapies and angiogenic resistance mechanisms.

Notch-dependent VEGFR3 upregulation allows angiogenesis without VEGF-VEGFR2 signalling

20 de March de 2012/in Casanovas's Lab/by miguel

Nature. 2012 Mar 18;484(7392):110-4. doi: 10.1038/nature10908. ABSTRACT Developing tissues and growing tumours produce vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs), leading to the activation of the corresponding receptors in endothelial cells. The resultant angiogenic expansion of the local vasculature can promote physiological and pathological growth processes. Previous work has uncovered that the VEGF and Notch pathways are […]

Use of a mouse model of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors to find pericyte biomarkers of resistance to anti-angiogenic therapy

1 de October de 2011/in Casanovas's Lab/by miguel

Horm Metab Res. 2011 Nov;43(12):884-9. doi: 10.1055/s-0031-1284381. Epub 2011 Sep 29. ABSTRACT The successful introduction of rationally targeted agents into standard cancer care is a testimony of the vast knowledge base in tumor biology. However, in order to provide individually tailored therapy to patients and to identify small subsets of patients with a high likelihood […]

Non-invasive monitoring of hypoxia-inducible factor activation by optical imaging during antiangiogenic treatment in a xenograft model of ovarian carcinoma

14 de June de 2011/in Casanovas's Lab/by miguel

Int J Oncol. 2011 Sep;39(3):543-52. doi: 10.3892/ijo.2011.1074. Epub 2011 Jun 9. ABSTRACT Targeting the hypoxia response pathway and angiogenesis are two promising therapeutic strategies for cancer treatment. Their use as single strategies has important limitations. Thus, development of combined regimens has become an important step toward improving therapeutic efficacy. Also, non-invasive monitoring of the response […]

Glycolytic phenotype and AMP kinase modify the pathologic response of tumor xenografts to VEGF neutralization

7 de May de 2011/in Casanovas's Lab/by miguel

Cancer Res. 2011 Jun 15;71(12):4214-25. doi: 10.1158/0008-5472.CAN-11-0242. Epub 2011 May 5. ABSTRACT VEGF antagonists are now widely used cancer therapeutics, but predictive biomarkers of response or toxicity remain unavailable. In this study, we analyzed the effects of anti-VEGF therapy on tumor metabolism and therapeutic response by using an integrated set of imaging techniques, including bioluminescence […]
