Therapeutic resistance and hematological tumors
Sureda’s & Farre’s Lab

DESCRIPTION

Our group aims to gain a better understanding of the clinical characteristics and mechanisms of progression and therapeutic resistance of hematological tumors with a focus on multiple myeloma and aggressive T and B lymphomas to propose new therapeutic strategies.

The lab is interested in improving the understanding of the molecular mechanisms leading to the progression and therapeutic resistance of multiple myeloma, including extramedullary disease, Hodgkin lymphoma and aggressive non-Hodgkin B and T lymphomas.

To develop these lines of research, we use patient samples and advanced preclinical models for therapeutic, mechanistic and functional studies. We have developed the technology to generate murine models derived from patients by orthotopic implantation (orthotopic PDX) and 2D/3D cultures that we can humanize using components of the human immune system (from the same patient from whom the model has been derived, when possible). Additionally, we are involved in a project that is developing humanized nanomedicines as a new therapeutic strategy for acute myeloid leukemia.

Our group is integrated by professionals from the Clinical Hematology Service of ICO/Hospitalet, the ProCURE/ICO Program and the Pathology Service of the Hospital of Bellvitge. Within the Hematology Service of the ICO Hospitalet, one of our main objectives is to promote translational research training for the professionals of the Service, generating opportunities for the completion of doctoral theses and stimulating new scientific leadership as well as to attract talent with a mixed clinical/researcher profile for the Service.

Overcoming access barriers in European CAR-T therapy: the role of decentralized manufacturing and the EASYGEN framework

4 de September de 2026/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

Cytotherapy. 2026 Jun 19;28(11):102939. doi: 10.1016/j.jcyt.2026.102939. Online ahead of print. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies have revolutionized the treatment of refractory B-cell malignancies, with seven approved therapies in major jurisdictions and rapid label expansion toward earlier lines of treatment. Nevertheless, patient access remains limited by multiple bottlenecks, including shortages of lentiviral vectors, […]

Teclistamab and Daratumumab Immune-Based Doublet Therapy for Relapsed/Refractory Multiple Myeloma: the TRIMM-2 Study

2 de September de 2026/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

Blood Adv. 2026 Sep 2:bloodadvances.2026020648. doi: 10.1182/bloodadvances.2026020648. Online ahead of print. ABSTRACT Teclistamab is the first approved B-cell maturation antigen×CD3 bispecific antibody with weight-based dosing for triple-class-exposed relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM). We evaluated the safety and efficacy of teclistamab combined with the anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody daratumumab in the phase 1b TRIMM-2 study. Eligible patients had […]

Radiation-Free Therapy for the Initial Treatment of Good Prognosis Early Non-Bulky Hodgkin Lymphoma, Defined by a Low Metabolic Tumor Volume and a Negative Interim PET After 2 Chemotherapy Cycles: The RAFTING Trial Protocol

27 de August de 2026/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

Biomedicines. 2026 Aug 19;14(8):1861. doi: 10.3390/biomedicines14081861. ABSTRACT Radiation-free treatment for early-stage classic Hodgkin lymphoma (eHL) has been shown to be less effective than standard combined-modality treatment (CMT; chemotherapy plus involved-node radiotherapy (INRT)), which achieves long-term disease control of 94-95%. Approximately 70% of patients can be cured with chemotherapy alone, whereas about 5% fail CMT. Identifying […]

Modeling of ex vivo immune response reveals a central role for CD8+CD25+ cells in Adult T-cell Leukemia survival: a long-term prospective cohort study

26 de August de 2026/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

Tumour Virus Res. 2026 Aug 26:200349. doi: 10.1016/j.tvr.2026.200349. Online ahead of print. ABSTRACT Adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) is a rare but aggressive CD4+CD25+ leukemia triggered by HTLV-1 infection. We quantified ex vivo levels of CD4+ and CD8+ (sub)populations and their antiproliferative, pro-apoptotic, antiviral and immunomodulatory interplay in short-term culture of primary cells from ATL patients, […]
