Molecular signaling
Viñals’s lab

DESCRIPTION

Our research is focused on the study of the implication of intracellular signaling cascades driving to pathological situations in cancer and vascular diseases.

The molecular signaling cascades that take place inside the cells are essential to respond to changes in their environment or to alter their homeostasis, for example, at the level of cell proliferation, movement, growth or metabolism. Understanding how these mechanisms of signal transduction work can explain how biological processes are controlled in a normal physiological context, but also, the alterations that take place in many pathologies. Our group investigates this in two pathological contexts: The first is ovarian epithelial cancer, where we study the pathways involved in metastasis and the mechanisms of resistance to therapies. A second context is a rare vascular disease, HHTs, in which, in collaboration with the group led by Toni Riera (Hospital de Bellvitge), we study which signaling pathways are altered in patients with mutations that cause this disease, and how treat them with new drugs.

Transfrontal three-dimensional visualization of midline cerebral structures

3 de July de 2007/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol. 2007 Aug;30(2):162-8. doi: 10.1002/uog.4073. ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To compare sonographic visualization of midline cerebral structures obtained by two-dimensional (2D) imaging and three-dimensional (3D) multiplanar and volume contrast imaging in the coronal plane (VCI-C), with transfrontal 3D acquisition. METHODS: Sixty consecutive healthy fetuses in vertex presentation at a mean gestational age of 24 (range, […]

Metronomic chemotherapy: an antiangiogenic scheduling

3 de March de 2007/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Clin Transl Oncol. 2007 Feb;9(2):93-8. doi: 10.1007/s12094-007-0018-3. ABSTRACT Conventional cytotoxic anticancer chemotherapeutic drugs were developed with the intent of treating cancer by direct killing or inhibition of growth of cycling tumour cells. Recently, however, there has been considerable interest in the notion of exploiting such drugs as angiogenesis inhibitors. The rationale is based on the […]

Prodigiosin induces the proapoptotic gene NAG-1 via glycogen synthase kinase-3beta activity in human breast cancer cells

24 de January de 2007/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Mol Cancer Ther. 2007 Jan;6(1):362-9. doi: 10.1158/1535-7163.MCT-06-0266. ABSTRACT Prodigiosin (2-methyl-3-pentyl-6-methoxyprodigiosene) is a bacterial metabolite that has anticancer and antimetastatic properties. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for these abilities are not fully understood. Gene expression profiling of the human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 treated with prodigiosin was analyzed by cDNA array technology. The majority of […]

Simple approach to prenatal diagnosis of transposition of the great arteries

24 de June de 2006/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol. 2006 Jul;28(1):22-5. doi: 10.1002/uog.2821. ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To analyze the most relevant anomalies, seen in a sequential segmental transverse views approach to imaging the fetal heart, that provide clues to the diagnosis of complete transposition of the great arteries (TGA). METHODS: We reviewed retrospectively all the cases of isolated TGA diagnosed in our […]
