Molecular signaling
Viñals’s lab

DESCRIPTION

Our research is focused on the study of the implication of intracellular signaling cascades driving to pathological situations in cancer and vascular diseases.

The molecular signaling cascades that take place inside the cells are essential to respond to changes in their environment or to alter their homeostasis, for example, at the level of cell proliferation, movement, growth or metabolism. Understanding how these mechanisms of signal transduction work can explain how biological processes are controlled in a normal physiological context, but also, the alterations that take place in many pathologies. Our group investigates this in two pathological contexts: The first is ovarian epithelial cancer, where we study the pathways involved in metastasis and the mechanisms of resistance to therapies. A second context is a rare vascular disease, HHTs, in which, in collaboration with the group led by Toni Riera (Hospital de Bellvitge), we study which signaling pathways are altered in patients with mutations that cause this disease, and how treat them with new drugs.

Can syndromic macrocephaly be diagnosed in utero?

25 de August de 2010/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol. 2011 Jan;37(1):72-81. doi: 10.1002/uog.8799. ABSTRACT OBJECTIVES: To compare the outcomes of fetuses with apparently isolated macrocephaly and those with associated findings, and to compare prenatal findings with postnatal diagnoses in children with syndromic macrocephaly. METHODS: We reviewed the files of all patients referred for suspected fetal macrocephaly, during a 10-year period from […]

Recent advances in cancer therapy: an overview

11 de March de 2010/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Curr Pharm Des. 2010 Jan;16(1):3-10. doi: 10.2174/138161210789941847. ABSTRACT The landscape of cancer treatment has dramatically changed over the last four decades. The age when surgery and radiotherapy were the only effective way to fight tumour growth has ended. A complex scenario where the molecular features of tumours seem to be the cornerstone of any therapy […]

Filamin B plays a key role in vascular endothelial growth factor-induced endothelial cell motility through its interaction with Rac-1 and Vav-2

30 de January de 2010/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

J Biol Chem. 2010 Apr 2;285(14):10748-60. doi: 10.1074/jbc.M109.062984. Epub 2010 Jan 28. ABSTRACT Actin-binding proteins filamin A (FLNA) and B (FLNB) are expressed in endothelial cells and play an essential role during vascular development. In order to investigate their role in adult endothelial cell function, we initially confirmed their expression pattern in different adult mouse […]

Molecular mechanisms behind the resistance of cisplatin in germ cell tumours

5 de January de 2010/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Clin Transl Oncol. 2009 Dec;11(12):780-6. doi: 10.1007/s12094-009-0446-3. ABSTRACT Cisplatin has been one of the principal chemotherapy agents for the last 30 years and is still used widely in the treatment of testicular, ovarian, lung, head and neck, bladder and several other tumours. Resistance to chemotherapeutic agents is a major obstacle for successful treatment. Treatment effect […]

Sunitinib inhibits tumor growth and synergizes with cisplatin in orthotopic models of cisplatin-sensitive and cisplatin-resistant human testicular germ cell tumors

7 de May de 2009/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Clin Cancer Res. 2009 May 15;15(10):3384-95. doi: 10.1158/1078-0432.CCR-08-2170. Epub 2009 May 5. ABSTRACT PURPOSE: Germ cell tumors (GCT) of the testis are highly curable, but those patients who are refractory to cisplatin (CDDP)-based combination chemotherapy have a poor prognosis. Therefore, identifying new alternatives for treatment remains a priority. Several studies support an important role for […]
