Molecular signaling
Viñals’s lab

DESCRIPTION

Our research is focused on the study of the implication of intracellular signaling cascades driving to pathological situations in cancer and vascular diseases.

The molecular signaling cascades that take place inside the cells are essential to respond to changes in their environment or to alter their homeostasis, for example, at the level of cell proliferation, movement, growth or metabolism. Understanding how these mechanisms of signal transduction work can explain how biological processes are controlled in a normal physiological context, but also, the alterations that take place in many pathologies. Our group investigates this in two pathological contexts: The first is ovarian epithelial cancer, where we study the pathways involved in metastasis and the mechanisms of resistance to therapies. A second context is a rare vascular disease, HHTs, in which, in collaboration with the group led by Toni Riera (Hospital de Bellvitge), we study which signaling pathways are altered in patients with mutations that cause this disease, and how treat them with new drugs.

Anterior and posterior complexes: a step towards improving neurosonographic screening of midline and cortical anomalies

25 de November de 2014/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol. 2015 Nov;46(5):585-94. doi: 10.1002/uog.14735. Epub 2015 Oct 12. ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To describe the anatomical structures that form the anterior (AC) and posterior (PC) complexes of the fetal brain and to categorize their anomalies in fetuses with cerebral abnormalities. METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively volume datasets from 100 normal fetuses between 20 and 30 […]

Mitochondrial phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK-M) is a pro-survival, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response gene involved in tumor cell adaptation to nutrient availability

29 de June de 2014/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

J Biol Chem. 2014 Aug 8;289(32):22090-102. doi: 10.1074/jbc.M114.566927. Epub 2014 Jun 27. ABSTRACT Mitochondrial phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK-M), encoded by the nuclear PCK2 gene, links TCA cycle intermediates and glycolytic pools through the conversion of mitochondrial oxaloacetate into phosphoenolpyruvate. In the liver PEPCK-M adjoins its profusely studied cytosolic isoform (PEPCK-C) potentiating gluconeogenesis and TCA flux. However, […]

Collaborative study of 4-dimensional fetal echocardiography in the first trimester of pregnancy

29 de May de 2014/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

J Ultrasound Med. 2014 Jun;33(6):1079-84. doi: 10.7863/ultra.33.6.1079. ABSTRACT OBJECTIVES: Accumulating evidence supports a role for 2-dimensional fetal echocardiography in the first trimester of pregnancy for the identification of congenital heart defects. Our objective was to investigate the role of 4-dimensional (4D) sonography in the identification of congenital heart defects between 11 and 15 weeks of […]

A DERL3-associated defect in the degradation of SLC2A1 mediates the Warburg effect

5 de April de 2014/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Nat Commun. 2014 Apr 3;5:3608. doi: 10.1038/ncomms4608. ABSTRACT Cancer cells possess aberrant proteomes that can arise by the disruption of genes involved in physiological protein degradation. Here we demonstrate the presence of promoter CpG island hypermethylation-linked inactivation of DERL3 (Derlin-3), a key gene in the endoplasmic reticulum-associated protein degradation pathway, in human tumours. The restoration […]

The PDGFRβ-AKT pathway contributes to CDDP-acquired resistance in testicular germ cell tumors

27 de November de 2013/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Clin Cancer Res. 2014 Feb 1;20(3):658-67. doi: 10.1158/1078-0432.CCR-13-1131. Epub 2013 Nov 25. ABSTRACT PURPOSE: We examined whether PI3K-AKT or extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathways could play a role in the development of cisplatin (CDDP) resistance in testicular germ cell tumor (TGT) cells. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We compared AKT and ERK activation levels in CDDP-sensitive testicular […]
