Molecular signaling
Viñals’s lab

DESCRIPTION

Our research is focused on the study of the implication of intracellular signaling cascades driving to pathological situations in cancer and vascular diseases.

The molecular signaling cascades that take place inside the cells are essential to respond to changes in their environment or to alter their homeostasis, for example, at the level of cell proliferation, movement, growth or metabolism. Understanding how these mechanisms of signal transduction work can explain how biological processes are controlled in a normal physiological context, but also, the alterations that take place in many pathologies. Our group investigates this in two pathological contexts: The first is ovarian epithelial cancer, where we study the pathways involved in metastasis and the mechanisms of resistance to therapies. A second context is a rare vascular disease, HHTs, in which, in collaboration with the group led by Toni Riera (Hospital de Bellvitge), we study which signaling pathways are altered in patients with mutations that cause this disease, and how treat them with new drugs.

Two-dimensional visualization and measurement of the fetal optic chiasm: improving counseling for antenatal diagnosis of agenesis of the septum pellucidum

19 de January de 2016/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol. 2016 Dec;48(6):733-738. doi: 10.1002/uog.15862. ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To develop an objective method for visualizing and measuring the fetal optic chiasm (OC) using transvaginal two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound in the coronal plane and to report measurements in fetuses with agenesis of the septum pellucidum (SP). METHODS: This was a prospective cross-sectional study of 115 morphologically […]

Cancer Stem-like Cells Act via Distinct Signaling Pathways in Promoting Late Stages of Malignant Progression

1 de January de 2016/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Cancer Res. 2016 Mar 1;76(5):1245-59. doi: 10.1158/0008-5472.CAN-15-1631. Epub 2015 Dec 30. ABSTRACT Cancer stem-like cells (CSC) play key roles in long-term tumor propagation and metastasis, but their dynamics during disease progression are not understood. Tumor relapse in patients with initially excised skin squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) is characterized by increased metastatic potential, and SCC progression […]

PTEN mediates Notch-dependent stalk cell arrest in angiogenesis

1 de August de 2015/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

Nat Commun. 2015 Jul 31;6:7935. doi: 10.1038/ncomms8935. ABSTRACT Coordinated activity of VEGF and Notch signals guides the endothelial cell (EC) specification into tip and stalk cells during angiogenesis. Notch activation in stalk cells leads to proliferation arrest via an unknown mechanism. By using gain- and loss-of-function gene-targeting approaches, here we show that PTEN is crucial […]

Phase II study of preoperative bevacizumab, capecitabine and radiotherapy for resectable locally-advanced rectal cancer

18 de April de 2015/in Viñals's lab/by miguel

BMC Cancer. 2015 Feb 26;15:59. doi: 10.1186/s12885-015-1052-0. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: To evaluate whether the addition of bevacizumab (BVZ) to capecitabine-based chemoradiotherapy in the preoperative treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) improves efficacy measured by the pathological complete response (pCR) rate. METHODS: A phase II two-step design was performed. Patients received four cycles of therapy consisting […]
