Metabolism and cancer
Menendez’s Lab

DESCRIPTION

Unlocking the metabolic secrets of cancer: Our “Metabolism and Cancer” team studies how cellular metabolism drives cancer growth, drug resistance, and metastasis. We use cutting-edge laboratory experiments, computational tools and clinical trials to validate our discoveries in cancer patients.

The extra virgin olive oil phenolic oleacein is a dual substrate-inhibitor of catechol-O-methyltransferase

3 de April de 2019/in Menendez's Lab/by miguel

Food Chem Toxicol. 2019 Jun;128:35-45. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2019.03.049. Epub 2019 Mar 29. ABSTRACT Catechol-containing polyphenols present in coffee and tea, while serving as excellent substrates for catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT)-catalyzed O-methylation, can also operate as COMT inhibitors. However, little is known about the relationship between COMT and the characteristic phenolics present in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). We […]

Intestinal Permeability Study of Clinically Relevant Formulations of Silibinin in Caco-2 Cell Monolayers

3 de April de 2019/in Menendez's Lab/by miguel

Int J Mol Sci. 2019 Mar 31;20(7):1606. doi: 10.3390/ijms20071606. ABSTRACT An ever-growing number of preclinical studies have investigated the tumoricidal activity of the milk thistle flavonolignan silibinin. The clinical value of silibinin as a bona fide anti-cancer therapy, however, remains uncertain with respect to its bioavailability and blood⁻brain barrier (BBB) permeability. To shed some light […]

Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 gene ablation protects low-density lipoprotein and paraoxonase-1 double deficient mice from liver injury, oxidative stress and inflammation

26 de March de 2019/in Menendez's Lab/by miguel

Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis. 2019 Jun 1;1865(6):1555-1566. doi: 10.1016/j.bbadis.2019.03.006. Epub 2019 Mar 21. ABSTRACT The risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease increases with obesity. Vulnerability to oxidative stress and/or inflammation represents a crucial step in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease progression through abnormal metabolic responses. In this study, we investigated the role of CCL2 […]

The moonlighting RNA-binding activity of cytosolic serine hydroxymethyltransferase contributes to control compartmentalization of serine metabolism

28 de February de 2019/in Menendez's Lab/by miguel

Nucleic Acids Res. 2019 May 7;47(8):4240-4254. doi: 10.1093/nar/gkz129. ABSTRACT Enzymes of intermediary metabolism are often reported to have moonlighting functions as RNA-binding proteins and have regulatory roles beyond their primary activities. Human serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) is essential for the one-carbon metabolism, which sustains growth and proliferation in normal and tumour cells. Here, we characterize the […]
