Metabolism and cancer
Menendez’s Lab

DESCRIPTION

Unlocking the metabolic secrets of cancer: Our “Metabolism and Cancer” team studies how cellular metabolism drives cancer growth, drug resistance, and metastasis. We use cutting-edge laboratory experiments, computational tools and clinical trials to validate our discoveries in cancer patients.

MAIN RESEARCH LINES

Virgin Olive Oil and Health: Summary of the III International Conference on Virgin Olive Oil and Health Consensus Report, JAEN (Spain) 2018

5 de September de 2019/in Menendez's Lab/by miguel

Nutrients. 2019 Sep 1;11(9):2039. doi: 10.3390/nu11092039. ABSTRACT The Mediterranean diet is considered as the foremost dietary regimen and its adoption is associated with the prevention of degenerative diseases and an extended longevity. The preeminent features of the Mediterranean diet have been agreed upon and the consumption of olive oil stands out as the most peculiar […]

In silico clinical trials for anti-aging therapies

25 de August de 2019/in Menendez's Lab/by miguel

Aging (Albany NY). 2019 Aug 24;11(16):6591-6601. doi: 10.18632/aging.102180. Epub 2019 Aug 24. ABSTRACT Therapeutic strategies targeting the hallmarks of aging can be broadly grouped into four categories, namely systemic (blood) factors, metabolic manipulation (diet regimens and dietary restriction mimetics), suppression of cellular senescence (senolytics), and cellular reprogramming, which likely have common characteristics and mechanisms of […]

Extra Virgin Olive Oil Contains a Phenolic Inhibitor of the Histone Demethylase LSD1/KDM1A

24 de July de 2019/in Menendez's Lab/by miguel

Nutrients. 2019 Jul 19;11(7):1656. doi: 10.3390/nu11071656. ABSTRACT The lysine-specific histone demethylase 1A (LSD1) also known as lysine (K)-specific demethylase 1A (KDM1A) is a central epigenetic regulator of metabolic reprogramming in obesity-associated diseases, neurological disorders, and cancer. Here, we evaluated the ability of oleacein, a biophenol secoiridoid naturally present in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), to […]

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy reverses non-alcoholic fatty liver disease modulating oxidative stress and inflammation

8 de July de 2019/in Menendez's Lab/by miguel

Metabolism. 2019 Oct;99:81-89. doi: 10.1016/j.metabol.2019.07.002. Epub 2019 Jul 4. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatic alterations, such as in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are frequently associated with obesity. To investigate the molecular mechanisms of these alterations and to identify molecules that could be used as potential therapeutic targets, we investigated the […]

Revisiting silibinin as a novobiocin-like Hsp90 C-terminal inhibitor: Computational modeling and experimental validation

30 de June de 2019/in Menendez's Lab/by miguel

Food Chem Toxicol. 2019 Oct;132:110645. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2019.110645. Epub 2019 Jun 26. ABSTRACT The flavonolignan silibinin is the major component of the extract isolated from the seeds of the milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Herein, we performed an in silico analysis focusing on the molecular docking of the putative atomic interactions between silibinin and heat shock protein […]
