Therapeutic resistance and hematological tumors
Sureda’s & Farre’s Lab

DESCRIPTION

Our group aims to gain a better understanding of the clinical characteristics and mechanisms of progression and therapeutic resistance of hematological tumors with a focus on multiple myeloma and aggressive T and B lymphomas to propose new therapeutic strategies.

The lab is interested in improving the understanding of the molecular mechanisms leading to the progression and therapeutic resistance of multiple myeloma, including extramedullary disease, Hodgkin lymphoma and aggressive non-Hodgkin B and T lymphomas.

To develop these lines of research, we use patient samples and advanced preclinical models for therapeutic, mechanistic and functional studies. We have developed the technology to generate murine models derived from patients by orthotopic implantation (orthotopic PDX) and 2D/3D cultures that we can humanize using components of the human immune system (from the same patient from whom the model has been derived, when possible). Additionally, we are involved in a project that is developing humanized nanomedicines as a new therapeutic strategy for acute myeloid leukemia.

Our group is integrated by professionals from the Clinical Hematology Service of ICO/Hospitalet, the ProCURE/ICO Program and the Pathology Service of the Hospital of Bellvitge. Within the Hematology Service of the ICO Hospitalet, one of our main objectives is to promote translational research training for the professionals of the Service, generating opportunities for the completion of doctoral theses and stimulating new scientific leadership as well as to attract talent with a mixed clinical/researcher profile for the Service.

Clinicopathological aspects and proviral load of adulthood infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-1: Comparison between juvenile and adulthood forms

25 de April de 2020/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by miguel

PLoS Negl Trop Dis. 2020 Apr 24;14(4):e0008241. doi: 10.1371/journal.pntd.0008241. eCollection 2020 Apr. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Infective dermatitis associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1), (IDH), is a chronic eczema occurring in HTLV-1 infected children. Rare cases of adulthood IDH have been reported and no study until now aimed to compare juvenile and adulthood IDH. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL […]

Complete genome sequence of human T-cell lymphotropic type 1 from patients with different clinical profiles, including infective dermatitis

29 de December de 2019/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by miguel

Infect Genet Evol. 2020 Apr;79:104166. doi: 10.1016/j.meegid.2019.104166. Epub 2019 Dec 25. ABSTRACT The HTLV-1 is the first human retrovirus and is associated with several clinical syndromes, however, the pathogenesis of these clinical manifestations is still not fully understood. Furthermore, there are few complete genomes publicly available, about 0.12 complete genomes per 10,000 infected individuals and […]

HTLV-1 proviral load in infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-1 does not increase after the development of HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis and does not decrease after IDH remission

19 de December de 2019/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by miguel

PLoS Negl Trop Dis. 2019 Dec 18;13(12):e0007705. doi: 10.1371/journal.pntd.0007705. eCollection 2019 Dec. ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-1 (IDH) is a recurrent eczema which affects children vertically infected with HTLV-1. In Bahia, Brazil, we recently reported that 47% of IDH patients also develop juvenile HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), a progressive disabling disorder which […]

The transcribed pseudogene RPSAP52 enhances the oncofetal HMGA2-IGF2BP2-RAS axis through LIN28B-dependent and independent let-7 inhibition

6 de September de 2019/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by miguel

Nat Commun. 2019 Sep 4;10(1):3979. doi: 10.1038/s41467-019-11910-6. ABSTRACT One largely unknown question in cell biology is the discrimination between inconsequential and functional transcriptional events with relevant regulatory functions. Here, we find that the oncofetal HMGA2 gene is aberrantly reexpressed in many tumor types together with its antisense transcribed pseudogene RPSAP52. RPSAP52 is abundantly present in […]

AIDS Res Hum Retroviruses. 2019 Sep;35(9):881-884. doi: 10.1089/AID.2019.0127. Epub 2019 Jul 10. ABSTRACT The human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infects 5 to 10 million individuals and remains without specific treatment. This retrovirus genome is composed of the genes gag, pol, env, and a region known as pX. This region contains four open […]
