Therapeutic resistance and hematological tumors
Sureda’s & Farre’s Lab

DESCRIPTION

Our group aims to gain a better understanding of the clinical characteristics and mechanisms of progression and therapeutic resistance of hematological tumors with a focus on multiple myeloma and aggressive T and B lymphomas to propose new therapeutic strategies.

The lab is interested in improving the understanding of the molecular mechanisms leading to the progression and therapeutic resistance of multiple myeloma, including extramedullary disease, Hodgkin lymphoma and aggressive non-Hodgkin B and T lymphomas.

To develop these lines of research, we use patient samples and advanced preclinical models for therapeutic, mechanistic and functional studies. We have developed the technology to generate murine models derived from patients by orthotopic implantation (orthotopic PDX) and 2D/3D cultures that we can humanize using components of the human immune system (from the same patient from whom the model has been derived, when possible). Additionally, we are involved in a project that is developing humanized nanomedicines as a new therapeutic strategy for acute myeloid leukemia.

Our group is integrated by professionals from the Clinical Hematology Service of ICO/Hospitalet, the ProCURE/ICO Program and the Pathology Service of the Hospital of Bellvitge. Within the Hematology Service of the ICO Hospitalet, one of our main objectives is to promote translational research training for the professionals of the Service, generating opportunities for the completion of doctoral theses and stimulating new scientific leadership as well as to attract talent with a mixed clinical/researcher profile for the Service.

Post-Transplantation Cyclophosphamide-Based Graft-versus-Host Disease Prophylaxis in HLA-Matched and Haploidentical Donor Transplantation for Patients with Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Comparative Study of the Lymphoma Working Party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation

3 de December de 2023/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

Transplant Cell Ther. 2023 Dec 1:S2666-6367(23)01710-4. doi: 10.1016/j.jtct.2023.11.021. Online ahead of print. ABSTRACT Post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (PTCy) has emerged as a promising approach for preventing graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). However, there is a lack of studies examining the impact of this GVHD prophylaxis when different donor types are used in […]

Classic Hodgkin lymphoma

1 de December de 2023/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

Hematol Oncol. 2023 Dec 1. doi: 10.1002/hon.3239. Online ahead of print. ABSTRACT Classic Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is rare disease, with an incidence of approximately 85,000 patients globally per year and a predilection for adolescents and young adults (ages 15-39). Since the introduction of combination chemotherapy in the 1960’s and radiation dating back to the early […]

Recovery of uninvolved heavy/light chain pair immunoparesis in newly diagnosed transplant-eligible myeloma patients complements the prognostic value of minimal residual disease detection

30 de November de 2023/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

Haematologica. 2023 Nov 30. doi: 10.3324/haematol.2023.284154. Online ahead of print. ABSTRACT Immunoparesis (IP) in multiple myeloma (MM) patients can be measured by classic assessment of immunoglobulin (Ig) levels or by analysis of the uninvolved heavy/light chain pair of the same immunoglobulin (uHLC) by the Hevylite® assay. In this study we evaluate the prognostic value of […]

Integrated analysis of randomized controlled trials evaluating bortezomib + lenalidomide + dexamethasone or bortezomib + thalidomide + dexamethasone induction in transplant-eligible newly diagnosed multiple myeloma

29 de November de 2023/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

Front Oncol. 2023 Nov 2;13:1197340. doi: 10.3389/fonc.2023.1197340. eCollection 2023. ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: Providing the most efficacious frontline treatment for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) is critical for patient outcomes. No direct comparisons have been made between bortezomib + lenalidomide + dexamethasone (VRD) and bortezomib + thalidomide + dexamethasone (VTD) induction regimens in transplant-eligible NDMM. METHODS: An […]

CD19-directed CAR T cells as first salvage therapy for large B-cell lymphoma: towards a rational approach

29 de November de 2023/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

Lancet Haematol. 2023 Dec;10(12):e1006-e1015. doi: 10.1016/S2352-3026(23)00307-1. ABSTRACT The approval of CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies for the second-line treatment of high-risk large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) has greatly affected salvage algorithms for this condition, and such therapies could have the potential to improve the course of relapsed or refractory LBCL. In this Review, we […]
