Therapeutic resistance and hematological tumors
Sureda’s & Farre’s Lab

DESCRIPTION

Our group aims to gain a better understanding of the clinical characteristics and mechanisms of progression and therapeutic resistance of hematological tumors with a focus on multiple myeloma and aggressive T and B lymphomas to propose new therapeutic strategies.

The lab is interested in improving the understanding of the molecular mechanisms leading to the progression and therapeutic resistance of multiple myeloma, including extramedullary disease, Hodgkin lymphoma and aggressive non-Hodgkin B and T lymphomas.

To develop these lines of research, we use patient samples and advanced preclinical models for therapeutic, mechanistic and functional studies. We have developed the technology to generate murine models derived from patients by orthotopic implantation (orthotopic PDX) and 2D/3D cultures that we can humanize using components of the human immune system (from the same patient from whom the model has been derived, when possible). Additionally, we are involved in a project that is developing humanized nanomedicines as a new therapeutic strategy for acute myeloid leukemia.

Our group is integrated by professionals from the Clinical Hematology Service of ICO/Hospitalet, the ProCURE/ICO Program and the Pathology Service of the Hospital of Bellvitge. Within the Hematology Service of the ICO Hospitalet, one of our main objectives is to promote translational research training for the professionals of the Service, generating opportunities for the completion of doctoral theses and stimulating new scientific leadership as well as to attract talent with a mixed clinical/researcher profile for the Service.

Immune biomarkers of increased infection risk in multiple myeloma

29 de January de 2026/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

Blood. 2026 Jan 29:blood.2025031744. doi: 10.1182/blood.2025031744. Online ahead of print. ABSTRACT Infection remains a leading cause of morbidity in multiple myeloma. Preventing infections is paramount and immune profiling could reflect the cumulative effect of host, tumor and treatment-related immunosuppression. However, current understanding of immune dysfunction and its association with infection is limited. To address this […]

HCT Frailty Scale (HCT-FS) for assessing frailty in adult candidates for allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation: an international prospective, observational cohort study

22 de January de 2026/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

EClinicalMedicine. 2026 Jan 9;91:103753. doi: 10.1016/j.eclinm.2025.103753. eCollection 2026 Jan. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Frailty assessment has emerged as a key component of pre-transplant evaluation. We aimed to validate, across international cohorts, the Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Frailty Scale (HCT-FS) for the assessment of frailty in adult candidates for allogenic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT). HCT-FS is designed for integration […]

Allogeneic HCT as Consolidation in B-cell Lymphomas After Exposure to Bispecific Antibodies: A GETH-TC Study

13 de January de 2026/in Sureda's & Farre's Lab/by

Blood Adv. 2026 Jan 13:bloodadvances.2025018152. doi: 10.1182/bloodadvances.2025018152. Online ahead of print. ABSTRACT Bispecific antibodies (BsAb) targeting CD20 and CD3 have shown efficacy for relapsed/refractory (R/R) B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL), but their impact on outcomes following allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) remains unclear. In this international, retrospective study, we compared outcomes of adult patients with R/R […]
